Are you thinking of transforming that outdated bathroom into your luxury dream oasis, but curious how much it will cost? Well your in the right place! Here in this article we will dive in and cover factors that control costs of your bathroom Oasis along with some insight of what you may expect to pay.

It should come as no surprise that remodeling in 2024 is considerably more expensive than when your parents did it back in the 90’s. Over the past 4 years alone, the trade labor costs have nearly doubled. Material and labor shortages, paired with an increase in demand, contributed to skyrocketing prices across the board. This still begs the question, how much does a bathroom remodel cost in 2024?

The first factor we must consider is what the size of the bathroom. Sounds pretty straight forward, but it is true. The larger the space, the more materials it will take, along with time in labor to complete, which contribute significantly to cost. But for the control of this article, lets keep it simple and reference a standard 5’x8′ 3-piece bathroom.

The second factor is the scope of work you are looking to have done. Costs can really add up when you consider making layout changes that require moving plumbing and electrical. Custom tile and stone installations are also much more expensive than and acrylic shower enclosure with a vinyl plank flooring, and a laminate countertop.

The third factor is materials. Materials fluctuate between 35-60% of the remodel cost on average. Things can fluctuate extensively based on the quality and finish of the materials. For instance, you can go to the local big box store and purchase some tiles for as low as $1/sqft. At the same time you can purchase handcrafted boutique tiles from overseas for $50/sqft or more and everything in between. The same applies for all finishes in the bathroom from faucets to fixtures. On average material prices range form $5,000-20,000 excluding labor.

The fourth, and potentially most import is who will be performing the work? Labor costs fluctuate on average between 40-65% of a bathroom remodel cost alone. This means a lot of Money can be saved if you’re a savvy DIY’er that can take on the multiple trades required to execute a bathroom remodel properly. If you’re up to the task, the good news is your costs will be primarily materials and sweat. But, if your like most people and don’t have the time, tools, and prerequisite skills to take on the task, you’ll need to hire a professional.

There are different professionals to choose from that can come in a range of varying skill levels, company sizes, and most importantly cost. The least expensive option is generally going to be a do-it-all handyman. They are not specialized in bathrooms or a specific trade, but have likely done a few and carry the basic multiple skill sets required to complete the project. However, fit and finish will likely not be as polished as a bathroom remodeler who does them daily as a specialty. The next level would be hiring a bathroom remodeler or home remodeler. They are much more specialized and are generally a sole owner/operators or have a small crew of one or 2 employees. Lastly are remodeling firms or construction companies. The company sizes can vary, but they usually have production teams, designers, and a management staff. Much of the work is outsourced to subcontractors and they manage the project. They are the most expensive option, but can deliver that Design-Build “white glove” experience. Depending on the professional or company you choose, that 5’x8′ bathroom remodel will average between $25,000-60,000.

In conclusion, we talked about some of the the main factors that affect bathroom remodel prices, and what you can expect to pay on average to DIY your own dream bathroom or to hire a professional. One thing is for certain, remodeling is definitely a luxury and the costs are much more than back in the 90s when your parents took on their remodel.
